Dials for Rolex Datejust II vs Datejust 41: What’s the Difference
In response to the growing popularity of larger wristwatches, Rolex introduced the Datejust II in 2009, expanding the classic Datejust line. This model featured a 41mm case, a noticeable increase from the traditional 36mm Datejust, catering to modern tastes for bolder wrist presence.
Just a few years later, Rolex refined the design and mechanics, leading to the release of the Datejust 41 in 2016. While both models share the same case size and look nearly identical at first glance, there are important differences beneath the surface - especially in movement and dial compatibility. In this section, our attention will be directed toward the dials of these particular models.
Datejust II (2009–2016)

Movement: Caliber 3135
Dial Type: Flat dials with two mounting posts on the back (similar to any Rolex dials made for caliber 3135 movement)
Dial Width: 30mm (1.18in)
Compatibility Note: These dials are unique to the Rolex Datejust II and not interchangeable with Datejust 41 or any Datejust 36 dials.
Datejust 41 (2016–Present)

Movement: Caliber 3235
Dial Type: Snap-on dials, similar to those used in ladies’ and midsize models. Recently, most Rolex models have adopted this dial mounting system. While I wouldn't necessarily say it's better or worse, but it does make replicating these dials significantly more difficult.
Dial Width: 30.3mm (1.19in)
Compatibility Note: These dials are not compatible with the older Datejust II watches.
If you take a closer look at the top image, you'll notice a distinct difference in the fonts. The newer Rolex Datejust 41 dials feature thicker typography. Additionally, the "SWISS MADE" inscription is positioned lower, aligning precisely with the minute track.
Why Reference Numbers Matter

Because the Datejust II and Datejust 41 and their dials look so similar, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish them by appearance alone. That's why it's essential to know your watch's reference number and movement caliber - especially when replacing or upgrading the dial. These details ensure proper fit and functionality.
