This authentic Rolex dial was removed from a vintage and historically intriguing reference 6917. While all watches under this model were equipped with the same Caliber 2035 movement and shared identical case dimensions and design features, a curious inconsistency emerged: some dials were printed with “Date,” while others bore the “Datejust” designation. Mechanically and visually, these watches were indistinguishable—making the difference purely a matter of branding.

It’s believed that Rolex may have initially marketed the 6917 as part of the Datejust line, later reserving the “Date” name for this reference as they prepared to introduce the updated 69174, which would carry the Datejust name forward with modern enhancements like a sapphire crystal. This subtle shift suggests that the 26mm Rolex Date may have represented a transitional or experimental phase in Rolex’s branding strategy.

Regardless of the reasoning, this dial stands as a fascinating artifact from a period of quiet evolution within Rolex’s history - making it a compelling piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The dial is in excellent condition, with no visible surface damage. Even the Luminova hour markers remain fully functional, glowing brightly in the dark. It features two mounting openings on the back, making it compatible with most Rolex 26mm models equipped with the Caliber 2035 or 2135 movements.
